Achievements, at a glance
On Dec 16, 2008, the first small group of Actioneers decided to celebrate Bijoy Dibosh with a group of children teaching them about this region’s long fight for independence. Since then, we have had a huge number of activities. A few of them are listed below.
►We won a small grants competition organized by the American Center of the U.S. Embassy, Dhaka, allowing us to start making Bangladesh’s first “text book based library for the visually impaired”.
►We have built over 80 tube wells, impacting more than 66,000 people, in the northern and southern regions of the country.
►We raised around Tk 14 lacs for the long term rehabilitation of Cyclone Aila victims, not to mention thousands of medicines, food stuff, clothes, etc.
►We have distributed over 16,000 pieces of clothing, many of them brand new, specially during winter.
►We have worked with Lawrence University, USA and Singapore Management University, Singapore to carry out projects funded by them and peopled by their students in Bangladesh.
►We have shared our iftaar with over a 15,000 street people through Action Piyaju-Beguni in the last three Ramadans as a preliminary training ground for new recruits.
►We have promoted pioneering concepts in volunteerism, like the “Shebar maddhome bijoyer prokash” campaign (Celebrating Victory Through Volunteerism) where over a 100 national/international organizations participated in celebrating Victory Day through volunteering for the underprivileged.
►We have teamed up with the fire department to train over 200 people in fire safety training in one of Dhaka’s most fire-hazard prone areas.
►We have held photography exhibitions at Drik Gallery to raise awareness about the plight of the downtrodden through creative means.
►We have held day long training workshops for over 200 privileged and underprivileged boys and girls teaching them the skills of responsible citizenship.
►We have built fourteen libraries for those who’d never get access to books otherwise.
►We work with visual impaired students, in fact the only visual impaired student studying in the Teachers’ Training College is there because of our efforts, along with five other girls in Badrunnessa College.
►There are now fully functioning branches of CommunityAction in Dhaka and Chittagong.
